You log on to Netflix after a hard day at work and switch on the subtitles to get through the latest HBO series.

You close your laptop, sigh and think: is it just me who doesn't have a clue what they're saying without subtitles?

Don’t panic. You’re not the only one fed up of reading the subtitles. Another “you” is hunched over her laptop in a bedroom on the other side of the world, reading subtitles instead of watching her favourite series.

You don’t have to struggle to get subtitle free on your own any more.

Become a subtitle freedom fighter

Subtitle Freedom Fighters is a 4-week group programme that’ll help you end the lonely struggle to get subtitle free. Join the October 2017 round to understand season 1 Netflix hit series Stranger Things.

Your life after Subtitle Freedom Fighters

  • No more wondering – am I the only one who couldn’t catch this?
  • You’ve got inside cultural knowledge on a classic film or series so you can impress your native-speaker friends
  • You realise that your fears and frustrations are shared with other non-native TV lovers everywhere
  • You meet movie/series buddies who you can hang out with to chat about which Harry Potter character you would be
  • You break free, not only from subtitles, but from the guilt and frustration you feel about still needing them after all these years
  • You can watch a scary series or movie all the way through without the subtitles

I feel more confident every Saturday when I watch Jane the Virgin. I’m catching more expressions and now the subtitles are off, I concentrate on the movement of the actors lips: I find it useful!

Why should you become a subtitle freedom fighter?

You can continue logging on to Netflix every evening after a stressful day and adding to your stress by worrying about all the bits of dialogue you can’t catch.

Or you can:

  • Get focused over 4 weeks and come away able to watch a scary series or film subtitle free.
  • Share your struggles in a friendly environment with a small group of like-minded subtitle freedom fighters
  • Get support from me and others daily in the Facebook group – ask questions, help others, share your fears and frustrations
  • Free yourself from that guilt that comes from still needing the subtitles when you realise you’re not the only one. In fact, you’re normal.

Before I met you, I felt guilty or even stupid when I watched movies. I really couldn’t imagine that I could improve my listening skills – until I tried your exercises. your course helped me change my mindset: I no longer beat myself up for not understanding.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time do I need per week to complete subtitle freedom fighters?

Around 2-3 hours per week, depending on how much time you spend interacting in the Facebook group. Each week you’ll also have individual work to complete: a clip to watch plus worksheets to fill out, video feedback to watch, a Memrise course to learn the new vocabulary from the clips.

What level of English do I need to participate in Subtitle Freedom Fighters

I recommend that you have at least B2 upper-intermediate level. Ideally, you should have a C1 or advanced level of English.

I'm introverted and prefer working alone. Is this group programme for me?

I’ve designed the programme to be introvert-friendly. You’ll have lots of individual work to do. The group is a place where you can share fears and frustrations (and your successes too!) in a non-judgemental environment. But you don’t have to share if you don’t feel comfortable. You can observe and listen and still get a lot out of the programme.
